My dog has a large, growing lump on her rear. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Female | spayed | 8 years and 10 months old | 15 lbs

My dog has this large thing on her rear end . It has been growing for a couple years. It’s a female mini Australian shepperd .approx 9 years old. It is not on the anus. It’s approx 2 inches by 2 inches. She does try to scratch it. I would so appreciate your taking a look at this situation. Thank you! Debbie

This certainly is a pretty large tumor and you should have that examined by your veterinarian. Your vet will give your dog a general exam to make sure she is in good condition and fit and then probably will take a fine needle aspirate (tissue of the tumor taken with a fine needle, and not painful) to be sent to a lab to determine whether the tumor is benign or malignant and whether it should be removed. Please make an appointment with your veterinarian soon.
