Why is my dog throwing up whole food? Is he eating too fast?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 10 months old | 15 lbs

Zeus has been throwing up frequently after eating only his shredded wet food. He has always laid down to eat and the food is coming up whole. Is he just eating too fast?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! He may be vomiting due to eating too fast that is a possibility. There are food bowls that are designed for cats to eat more slowly so this is certainly an option to consider if Zeus eats too fast. Please keep in mind that other things could also be going on and causing vomiting. This can be caused by many conditions primarily gastrointestinal in nature such gastroenteritis and gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. If this continues, I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork. Good luck!
