My puppy throws up and loses appetite intermittently. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 7 months and 12 days old | 15 lbs

Jack was diagnosed with colitis at 8 wks old, so we feed him Royal Canin GI blend. All his blood work checked out, and he recently had a series of X-rays with barium (we thought he’d swallowed something. Turns out he was just consitpated) but once every 2 weeks or so, he’ll wake up with no appetite, throw up a few times throughout the day, take lots of naps, then wake up fine the next day. Any thoughts on if this is normal for a puppy? Or anything further I can do to prevent tummy upset?

This kind of chronic intermittent vomiting and diarrhea can be common in dogs and can have a number of different causes. Food sensitivity or a sensitive stomach is possible, as are intestinal parasites, metabolic problems like kidney disease, or even a hormonal disease like Addison's disease. I would recommend following up with your vet and seeing if there are any more tests that would be recommended like blood work or a fecal analysis. Or, your vet may want to change Jack's diet to something hypoallergenic as a next step.
