My dog is scratching a red, swollen spot. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 2 years and 9 months old | 17 lbs

My dog has been scratching here for the past couple of days. This has happened before. We were told it was an infection but I don’t recall it being this swollen and red, possibly because of the consistent scratching? She isn’t really reacting when I touch it so I assume it’s not causing too much pain. Should I bring her to the vet for some antibiotics and is it a case of an emergency and something I should be worried about. She was recently spayed but I don’t know if that could be the reason.

That looks like an inverted nipple to me. You can try gently squeezing to see if you can get it back to its correct position and washing the spot carefully with mild soap and warm water and dry it thoroughly. If it doesn't improve greatly in the next few days, or if she gets sick, please get her in to see your vet.
