How long will my dog's mammary glands stay swollen after heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 88 lbs

Porscha went through a heat cycle two months ago. Her mammary glands became very swollen. Well most have returned to normal. The last 2 are still swollen. Not hot. No fluid from area. Not sore to touch. How long will they remain swollen?

Hello, sorry to hear about Porscha. It sounds like she is undergoing an episode of false pregnancy. This happens occasionally in dogs that undergo a heat cycle and don't become pregnant. This should resolve on its own within a couple of weeks, however, if she is not getting better or if she develops any discharge or pain, then she should be evaluated immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.
