How to treat cat flea allergies and stop scratching without steroids?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 13 lbs

What else can I do to help my cat that is allergic to fleas? I use Frontline Plus or it's generic and before then I used Comfortis. He scratches and loses small patches of fur (just a few but no bleeding or redness) when he gets bit by a flea. I've been to the vet but don't want to give him steroids (afraid to) What else can I do?

I can understand being nervous about steroids, but that is what helps with allergies, especially flea allergies. If you clear up all the fleas both on Cody and in your home, then likely only a short course of steroids is needed. I would speak with your vet about your concerns, and discuss trying a course of steroids, which would likely really help him.
