Senior cat with scabs, lumps, and no purring: Is it old age?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Male

Today, the first rainy day for a few weeks. he came inside and sat on my lap and purred happily. then later on he came in again and immediately curled up on my lap and went to sleep. i wrapped a towel around him as it was a little cold and he was happy but there was no purring. this isn't normal for him. He has terrible scabs all over his ears and some over his body. he also had some irregular lumps on his back. We reckon he is quite old. is something wrong or is it just old age?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These could be benign or malignant growths. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. There could also be skin disease going on as well. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good day!
