Why is my cat vomiting, having diarrhea, and not eating or drinking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 years and 1 month old | 11 lbs

Hi, my cat is having a problem, she started having diarrhea on Thursday, on Friday she started throwing up a lot, like every 15-20 minutes, and she stopped drinking and eating. We took her to the vet the next morning, who took some blood and sent it for a blood test. She gave the cat some fluid under the skin and antibiotics. We took her to a different vet, who will keep the cat on fluids through IV until tomorrow. Neither of them knows what is wrong with the cat, so I hoped someone else would.

Poor Sophy! I'm sorry to hear that she's having this problem. The first page of her lab work looks fairly normal, apart from some mild dehydration. I'm afraid I can't read the second page - would you happen to have a copy in English that you could upload? There are many things that can cause vomiting and diarrhea, so it's hard to say what might be wrong without more information. If no significant abnormalities are seen on her blood work, it's likely that she will need abdominal x-rays and possibly ultrasound as the next diagnostic steps to determine what might be causing her vomiting and diarrhea. In the meantime, supportive care (IV fluids, medication for nausea, etc.) is likely the best plan. I would recommend talking to your current veterinarian about what he/she recommends as the next step from here, or requesting referral to a specialist for further work-up.
