My pit bull has a soft, painless lump on his chest. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 60 lbs

My pit bull is about a year and a half old and seemingly overnight on his ribcage he developed a lump about the size of two pecans side by side. It's pain free and soft with almost a sack like feel. There is also what seems like a thin arm running under the skin about an inch off to an small area of patchy fur like a scratch. If I mess with the lump I can make that patch protrude from the skin a bit. But there doesn't seem to be any damage to the skin.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good night!
