Dog's eye red, swollen, itchy. Can I use my prescribed eye ointment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 50 lbs

My dog came back from a walk in the woods and the skin around eye is red, swollen and itchy. I think he might have rolled in something he is allergic to. I have neomycin and polymyxin b sulfates and dexamethasone ophthalmic ointment that I was prescribed to treat seasonal eye allergies. Is it okay to apply that to the affected area? My vet reopens tomorrow at 8 a.m. so I plan to check with them then.

Hello and thank you very much for your question. I cannot recommend Play saying this went meant in your dogs I because it has a steroid in it. Let me explain. If your dog has a scratch on the cornea, the steroid will actually cause the eye to become worse because it delay is healing. If there is any possible way to send you our regular veterinarian a picture of the wound or if you can take him to an emergency vet, that would be best. Eyes are something that you cannot take risks with because the slightest wounds can turn ugly within a matter of days. You can, however, flush out his eyes with artificial tears during the time you wait for your regular veterinarian if you are unable to take him to the vet sooner. But my ultimate recommendation is to seek veterinary attention as soon as possible to get a full ophthalmic examination.
