Is my cat safe from vaccine-induced rabies 16 days after vaccination?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

When can vaccine induced rabies occur and show symptoms after vaccination? I vaccinated my cat 16 days ago. I don't know whether it was live or inactivated vaccine. She still seems okay. Is she fine or she may get rabies?

Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Vaccine induced rabies is VERY rare. If it does occur, you typically see limb paralysis. This can begin in the vaccinated limb 7 days after vaccination with modified live virus (MLV). However, the MLV rabies vaccine is rarely used. If your cat was vaccinated 16 days ago, she should be fine. If she has any symptoms you are concerned about, I would take her to see your veterinarian immediately.
