My dog was exposed to hookworms. Should I worry about infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My mother in laws dog has been on hookworm medication for four days. Without knowing her dog had worms I brought my two dogs to visit yesterday. They drank from the same bowl and played together. Should I be concerned that my dogs contracted hook worms?

Hello there! Great question! Hookworms in dogs are transmitted orally, through the skin, and are passed from mother to puppies in utero. If your dogs were in contact or around the stool of the infected dog it is certainly possible your dogs could have contracted hookworms. It generally takes at least 2-3 weeks for eggs to be shead in the stool of an infected animal, at which point the infected animal typically develops bloody diarrhea. I would recommend contacting your regular veterinarian to discuss the possibility treatment options (ie. prophylactic deworming), which your veterinarian may require diagnostics and/or exam. Hopefully, this information was helpful and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
