Is it okay to leave my dog's wound staples in for two weeks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 17 days old | 35 lbs

I will try and keep this to the point, My dog 9 months old, Redbone Coonhound, Got a cut on his head, 4inches long , i got staples in it. about 10 , I put a cone on him because he was putting his paw on them messing with it. its been 6days took cone off and he is still messing with it. i put cone back on him. I should be take the staples out on Monday, would it be ok to leave in him 3 more days longer and take out on Thursday? So he would have had them in 2 weeks. ??

Thank you very much for your inquiry. Given that the dog will have his cone on and that the wound seems to be healing nicely, most veterinary staples can stay in for two weeks and not have any problems when they are removed. I encourage you, however, to contact the veterinarian who placed the staples and make sure that this is the case. I hope this helps. Have a nice day.
