Puppy's testicle moving up and down: Should I neuter him or wait?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered

We are looking to get a German shepherd puppy 10.5 weeks old. He is 5 generation pedigree, has been vet checked at 8 weeks and at 10.5 weeks. He has no heart murmurs or hernia, been DNA tested- all clear (DM-Carrier/ HUU-Clear/MDR1-Clear), fully wormed. The issue is his his testicle going up and down on a daily basis, and always could be a risk of going into the canal. Since we don't want to neuter him, please advise what is best; to neuter him or get a small stitch to bring his testicles down?

If a testicle is retained in the abdomen, then it is always best to neuter the dog. However, it is common that a testicle will move up and down in the canal in a puppy and most of those dogs will have the testicles remain in the scrotum as they age. I would certainly discuss this with your vet, but I will often recommend waiting until the dog is around 6 months of age to determine if the testicles are staying in the scrotum normally before making any surgical decisions. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and answers your question. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
