My dog's scraped paw pads are swollen. Will it heal or need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 9 months old | 59 lbs

Hello my 5 year old staffy went for a long run yesterday and scraped her pads and nails right down. I cleaned them up and put a sock and bobble on them they were too tight one foot is more swollen than the other. I've removed all socks. Then I tried to soak in Epson salts and she acts likes she's in pain and her legs start shaking. Will this go away on its own or will I need to take her the vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In most cases, this goes away on its own fairly quickly. Epsom salt baths usually help speed up the healing process by doing it 3 times a day for 3-5 days. However, in some cases, a visit to the veterinarian is needed for prescription of pain control medications. If she continues to act painful, it would be best to have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!
