My dog ate wild mushrooms. Is it an emergency? What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 12 lbs

My dog ate some mushrooms growing wild in the grass. I don't know what kind of mushrooms they were, except thay they were light beige (the color of button mushrooms in the supermarket). I also don't know how much, not more than a handful. He had already swallowed before I could stop him.

This type of intoxication could be causing an inflammation infection of the gastrointestinal system and surrounding organs (like pancreas and liver). A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is immediately essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics and possibly symptomatic treatment may be necessary.
