Why is my German Shepherd chewing his paws and legs constantly?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 94 lbs

My German Shepherd is always chewing on his toes, pads and his 'wrist' area. We have checked him out, bathes him in oatmeal Dog shampoo but nothing is helpful. I've owned dogs for over 50 years now, but this one has me stumped! Also, he eats Purina Healthy Deloghts, grain free, chicken and other good stuff. He gets all natural treats... What am I doing wrong?!

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. What you are describing could be an allergy due to a contact allergen such as grass. If he plays in the grass regularly, I would soak his feet in warm water and shampoo them daily. This could also be a behavioral problem, which may need anti-anxiety medications. A food trial with a prescription diet such as Royal Canin Rabbit and Potato for 4-6 weeks would be something to consider as well. I would also recommend using Pramosoothe spray and Welactin omega 3 fish oil capsules, which both can be found online quite easily. I hope this helps! If the problem persists or worsens, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Remy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
