How do I prevent my dog from scratching a sore under his ear?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 8 years and 5 months old | 62 lbs

Our 7 yr old dog (male lab-pit mix 60 lbs.) has a dime size sore below his ear. How do we keep him from scratching it?

You could try to give him Benadryl (see link below) twice a day and also put a cone collar on him. This will prevent him from scratching it. If he continues to scratch it will never heal. Also, I would check inside his ears to make sure he doesn't have an infection. Normal ears should be a smooth pink color, no discharge and shouldn't smell. If they don't look normal or if you are unsure or if the wound under his ear isn't healing, I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to determine whether or not he has an ear infection and start him on the proper meds for his ears if needed and his wound.
