Why is my dog lethargic, not eating, and breathing weird after spay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed

New adopted female dog just sleeps/lay. She recently got her uterus removed, and hasn’t pooped in last 24 hours. Doesn’t eat or go potty unless we carry her out. Left crate open for hours and she didn’t move out. Her breathing seems stange too. And her breath is a little hot, unless we give her ice cubes (she’s only interested in water and ice cubes)

I strongly recommend a post-surgery recheck as she should be more willing and able to move around and eat within 24hours of surgery, I would be concerned she may have a fever and infection which may be running her down or may still be in pain requiring additional medication
