Why is my 8-week-old kitten lethargic, not eating, and stiff?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered

My 8 week old kitten is just laying in its bed today, eating very little. He is not playing like his sisters and like he usually does. His backend seems to look a little stiff to me when he does get up to walk around. One of his sisters got in the bed with him and was neading his stomach with her paws a couple of times. He was fine last night, playing and eating. Any suggestions?

It's possible BoBo may not be feeling well, as lethargy and a reduction in appetite are very common signs that something isn't right. Keeping an eye on him may help, however, if he doesn't perk up in a day, or starts to show any other signs of illness (visible pain, shying away from attention, not eating or drinking, changes in urinary or bowel habits, etc) then seeking veterinary care is best to ensure there isn't a more serious issue ongoing.

Young puppies and kittens don't have the reserves of older animals and require earlier intervention. I recommend to have your kitten examined today since he is not eating well (they can get low blood sugar and may also not drink as much as needed). It's always better to play it safe with these little babies. I hope he starts feeling better quickly!
