My senior dog's testicles are uneven and red. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

hello. sorry for graphic images! we are hoping you can provide some advice. Our 12 year old golden retreiver has one larger and one much smaller testicle and it is dark but now also seems to be red. They have always been quite big and saggy as he is getting older but we haven't specifically noticed one bigger than the other up until now. They look redder in real life than in these images, but are a pinky red.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. He will need to see his veterinarian as it is abnormal for the testicles to be so different in size. He may be developing a growth on the larger one. He will likely need to be neutered and the testicle examined under the microscope. You want to ensure that he has developed testicular cancer. He could also have a benign growth, an infection or swelling resulting from a bruise from some sort of trauma. Either way though, he needs to be seen. I hope this information helps!
