My dog has false pregnancy symptoms after heat. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 11 months old | 125 lbs

I assume Daisy is going through a false pregnancy. Her teats look like she has been nursing, she has milky discharge from them, she is coddling & cleaning her toys and trying to pick them up and carry them around like a mama would carry her baby. She has been very clingy and very whiny. All these symptoms started a week ago. Her last heat cycle was 1st wk of April. She is also eating much. She will nibble a few bites of her food and that's it. Is this normal? She was not exposed to any male dogs

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It does sound like this could be a false pregnancy. I would recommend just letting her continue on as she is, and once she comes out of this please have her spayed. She will continue to have false pregnancies with each heat (and this is emotionally distressing for animals) as well as be at a very high risk for a pyometra. Otherwise, that behaviour is normal for false pregnancy. If there is any cream coloured discharge from her back end please have her into a vet right away. Best of luck with Daisy.
