Why does my dog suddenly pee outside his potty pad when I travel?

My Maltese is completely trained to do his necessities indoors in a pad. I travel during summer and my father takes care of him in our house (so his routine doesn’t change). Even so, a few weeks after I’m gone he starts to pee outside the pad. Once I came back I trained him again. But im currently on a trip and he is beginning to do the same thing. Why does he do that? Since the behavior only occurs when you are away and resolves when you get back, I wonder if it is stress related. There are a number of options to decrease stress. You could consider an Adaptil diffuser which would work for a month ( https://www.adaptil.com/us/Products/ADAPTIL-Calm-Home-Diffuser ). I have also had luck with Rescue Remedy ( http://www.bachflower.com/rescue-remedy-pet/ ) which can be added to the water.
