My dog has spreading mouth warts. Are they viral and how to treat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 4 months and 24 days old | 22 lbs

Hello My dog has a lot of warts in his mouth. In the beginning he had only 2 or 3 but now they are spreading so fast. With what should we treat them? Cuz our vet said maybe they will fall when his immunity get stronger or either way he has to remove them with surgery.

I am sorry to hear about Tyson! These look like they could be viral papillomas. You can read more about them at https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951355 . In most cases they go away on their own eventually. Some vets will actually crush some of the growths with hemostats and it is thought this sometimes stimulates the immune system to attach the masses though this is theoretical and it isn't really known if they would have gone away on their own anyway. In rare cases when they are interfering with a dog's ability to eat we may need to do surgery or freeze them off.
