My dog has ear issues. What's the best treatment for sensitive dogs?

Hi I'm pretty sure Layla has ear mites again. Please could you tell me what the typical treatment is as she is very sensitive to medications and I don't want the vet to give something very strong if it's not necessary and cause her more problems. Vets here have a tendency of immediately giving the strongest medication regardless of the dogs history, size or breed. Many thanks.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Layla! Ear mites are very rare in adult dogs. The most common reason for itchy, painful, red ears and scratching of the ears and shaking of the head is an ear infection. Puppies and kittens usually get ear mites. Ear infections are caused by bacterial and/or yeast infection from allergies to the environment or to food. Ear infections are diagnosed by an ear exam and by looking at a smear of the ear wax under the microscope (which can also confirm ear mites). Ear infections are treated with an ear cleaner and medicated drops. It is best to have a Vet examined your dog to provide the appropriate medication. As a Vet I do not prescribe the strongest medication but one that will work for the infection that the patient has. Below is a link to a good ear cleaner and instructions on how to clean an ear. The best thing for Layla, as ear infections are painful, is to see your Vet. You can voice your medication concerns to the Vet in person, we tend to listen to owners!
