My dog's rash won't heal after months. What can I do for him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old

Hello! So, I have a dog that is German Sheppard / Red Heeler. About 5 months ago, he got a HORRIBLE rash. I rushed him to an emergency vet, but the vet we went to (clearly just wanted money). They were very rude to not only me, but to my dog. They barley looked at the rash itself, and diagnosed him with “hot spot”. They gave me medications for him. I was very good about making him take all of his medicine. After the medicine was gone, the rash STILL wasn’t gone. It hasn’t gone away ever since

Ouch! Poor Remi! I would make sure he isn't licking the area. If so, I would put a cone collar on him to prevent this. It will never heal if he continues to lick it. I would also take him to your regular vet instead of an emergency vet for an second opinion. Without know what meds he was previous prescribe, I cannot say what other meds he needs to try to help resolve this. Your vet may recommend a different antibiotics and stronger allergy meds like steroids to help clear it up. If the skin looks thickened, there may now be a yeast componenet involved and needs to be started on an anti-fungal medicine. You can also try to bathe him in a medicated shampoo like miconahex-triz to see if this will give him some relief. You can also give benadryl twice a day but I am afraid he will need something stronger. See link below. I hope this helps ! https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/benadryl/#
