My cat twitches, ripples, and attacks her tail. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

I think my cat may have Feline hyperesthesia, but I recently lost my job and cannot afford to take her to a vet. She gets ripples down her back, twitches, jumps up and attacks her tail and will suddenly run like her tail is on fire. She doesn't seem to be in pain and does not have fleas. Does she need to see a vet or will she be ok? I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but she is a small cat for her age!

You should know that Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome is a very rare disease, but if this is what Lightning has it can be very difficult to treat. You said she doesn't have fleas, however most of the time this is in fact the culprit; so much so that it warrants treating for fleas even if you don't see any. Also, some of these cats actually have an allergy to their food, so it's worth trying a hypoallergenic diet trial.
