New puppy is very shy. How do I help her get out of her shell?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | unneutered | | 1lb

We got our dog, Margot, from a local English Shepherd breeder. We brought her home last night. She has been very shy, and not much how we would expect a puppy to be, (playful, attached, etc.) She keeps to herself mainly. She lets us pet her but does not beg to be pet like my other pets. What are ways to get her out of her shell? She has not exhibited any aggressive behaviors, she’s just extremely passive and seems a bit nervous around us. I want her to be comfortable and enjoy her puppy life.

Thanks for using petcock, and congratulations on your new puppy! Puppy behavior when going to a new home can vary widely. Some puppies handle the transition without an issue, and others may be more shy at first as they get used to their life away from their siblings and the home they previously knew. I would use lots of positive reinforcement, including treats, toys, and attention to help her acclimate to her new environment. With time, she may adjust and become more bubbly and outgoing; some dogs, however, have a more reserved personality, so you will just have to wait and see which she is when she's better acquainted with her new environment! Best of luck, and congratulations again!
