My new kittens have diarrhea despite medication. What's next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 30 days old | 1.44 lbs

Kittens adopted 23/5, approx 6 wks old, runny stools after they got home. Told to begin Sulfadimethoxine 27/3 for 10 days; .8 first day, .4 following days. Stools still runny after 4 days of meds. Eating, drinking, peeing well, energy level extremely high, sleeping normally throughout the day and through the night. What else should I be doing?

Hello, sorry to hear about your kittens. You need to continue the medications until finished and have their stool tested. This medication will treat for coccidia, however, it will not treat for any additional type of parasites. Alternatively, if you have recently changed their diet, this could contribute to their soft stools. It may take longer than 4 days to adjust to their new diets. Continue doing what you are doing for not and if their stools are not improving or if they are getting worse, then their stools should be tested for any other types of parasites. Hope this helps and best of luck.
