Why is my dog's paw pad sore and causing her to limp?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | 13 years and 3 months old | 18 lbs

My 12 year old Dachshund has a sore around her paw pad on her back left leg. She can't sit down comfortably because it hurts her. And when she gets up it hurts her to the point that her leg shoots around awkwardly until she gets her balance and then she's fine. This just started bothering her and the last 2 hours. It looks like some kind of skin tag or wart that she has irritated.

This could be a cyst, a little abscess, a foreign body reaction or a tumor. You will need to take Tootsie to a vet for an exam. If it is a tumor, the vet will take a tissue sample to determine whether it is malignant or benign. If there is a foreign body, it will have to be found and removed. An abscess or a cyst will have to be evacuated. Your dog may also need antibiotics and pain medication. Please make an appointment with your veterinarian tomorrow.
