My dog's breath stinks, black gums. How can I check her mouth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Female | 4 years and 10 months old | 32 lbs

I don’t know what to do about her teeth. Her breath stinks a lot however she chews the dog treats for teeth. The vet has never saw an issue with her teeth but her gums are black like some human gums are. Should I be concerned? She won’t let me in her mouth with anything besides food. It is truly a struggle. Help.

This sounds like your dog has either severe gingivitis or dental disease or a painful ulcer or injury in her mouth. I suggest you make an appointment with a vet to check her mouth and teeth. She may need a dental cleaning or other treatment too stop this pain. She may have to be sedated for the vet to be able to thoroughly examine her mouth. Please make an appointment with your or another vet on Tuesday.
