First-time dog mom: How to check her and puppies? Why one died?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 50 lbs

My baby girl just had her puppies last night, she is a first time mom and a little over a year old, what are some things I should look for to make sure she is doing good. And on a side note we let her give birth privately so she wouldn’t be anxious, but when we got up this morning one of the puppies didn’t make it, she cleaned all other seven but not this one, just wondering what might of happened?

Hello, congratulations on your new puppies. Sometimes puppies may be deceased at birth due to unknown reasons (abnormalities in development most often) and mom does not acknowledge that puppy. Because she is a first time mom, there is a chance she may have missed that puppy or could have been overwhelmed by what was going on. As long as the everyone else is doing ok, nursing, moving, and defecating normally then they should be ok. Make sure mom is getting plenty of food and water as her demand is going to be much greater while nursing. You may switch her to puppy food or increased her feedings. Hope this helps and best of luck.
