My dog has a hard lump on her head. Should I take her to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | 2 years and 2 months old | 9 lbs

Pixie has a hard lump abou a centimeter in diameter on the back of her head on her skull between her ears. Its like a hard bump on a human after a knock. It has been there for three weeks, not changed at all, we thought it may go down. No sign of injury or broken skin. It just appeared. Any idea? It doesnt wobble, nor is it hot or like an abscess. She is her usual self, everything normal. Cant take a photo ad it doesnt show due to her coat.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pixie. I would recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She will likely need a procedure known as a fine needle aspirate to determine the type of mass she has on her head. In this procedure, the veterinarian will use a needle to collect a sample of cells to assess under the microscope. If the mass appears suspicious of being cancerous, then it will need to be surgically removed. If it does not and it is not bothering her, then you can safely monitor it. I hope this information helps!
