My kitten has a respiratory disease and won't eat. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 17 days old

My kitten was breathing really fast yesterday and we took her to the ER Vet. They told us they think she may have a respiratory disease and have her some injections. They also gave us some chewable supplements (Vetri Lysine Plus) that she is supposed to eat twice a day every 12 hours. I’ve been trying all night and she won’t eat food (wet or dry) and she won’t eat the supplement either. I’ve tried warming up her wet food and she just moves away from it.

Unfortunately, cats really need to be able to smell their food to have an appetite. That can be very challenging with a cat that has a respiratory disease. You are doing the right thing by warming up the food. I will also sometimes add the water from canned tuna or get fishy smelling cat food to help with that problem. I see that you posted this question 8 hours ago, so I hope you have been able to get Josephine to eat something. If not, another trick that will sometimes help is to close the bathroom door and run the shower to get the room very steamy, then allow her to sit in there for 5-10 minutes. Sometime that can help with congestion. If her breathing does not seem to be improving after the injections and she is still not eating, I would recommend contacting your veterinarian for help. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and that Josephine feels better soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
