My dog ate butter. Could he get pancreatitis from a small amount?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Spitz | Male | neutered | 8 years and 8 months old | 17 lbs

My dog is a male mittelspitz, 17 lb, healthy, 8 years old. He ate about a tablespoon of butter about 15 minutes ago (it's 11:40 PM EST) and I'm worried for his health, should I be concerned about pancreatitis?

It is possible that butter could cause pancreatitis, but that small amount is unlikely to cause a problem. However,’if she has a history of pancreas problems then I would be more concerned. If this is the case then she should be seen by your veterinarian immediately to discuss inducing vomiting. However, with a low risk ingestion I usually don’t induce vomiting as aspiration can be a risk of vomiting and may pose more risk than the butter. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
