When is it safe for my puppy to go to groomer after first shots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 months and 23 days old | 14.4 lbs

I went to Vetco and my puppy got the following vaccines (first picture). On the receipt, it says he is okay to receive services. I also asked Vetco if he can be groomed. They said that my puppy can be groomed in 24 hours. But when I went to my local vet, they told me that he should not be going to dog concentrated areas until he gets these shots (second picture). My puppy’s fur is growing really long and I want to take him to a groomer. Would it be okay to go?

Your vet is correct. It is not a good idea to take your puppy to a groomer before it has had at least a second round of vaccines, even better after the third round. Your puppy will only have a general immunity to diseases after the first shots. The second round of shots is what makes a specific disease provided maternal antibodies was not present at the first round ( this is why we give a third round as sometimes the first round does not work due to maternal antibodies rendering the vaccine useless). So if you take your puppy to a place frequented by many dogs, it could be infected with parvo, kennel cough and other terrible puppy diseases. If her hair is too long now, you can cut some of it off with scissors. By the time your puppy had its second and third shots, the groomer can then remedy any beauty-issues.
