My dog's worsening itch, dandruff, watery eyes, and sneezing. Allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 9 years and 4 months old

I think my dog may have allergies. always been itchy but as years go she gets more itchy. mainly itchy around face/ears/eyes. also has dandruff on belly/back. Licks and bites paws/groin. I read somewhere that allergies worsen over time in dogs. I’ve never had her tested for allergies but she does have medicated shampoo from the vet that helps. I’m not sure if this is related but she has watery eyes and sneezes a lot. Does this sound like allergies? Also gets Revolution monthly.

Yes, this sounds and looks like she has allergies. You are correct allergies often worsen as the dog ages. Just like people inhalant allergies can cause runny nose and eyes in addition to itching. Luckily her skin does not show severe lesions so you should be able to control the itch and skin flaking with a hypo allergenic shampoo, fatty acid skin vitamins, and Benadryl if needed to control the itching. There is a section on this website that has dosages for common over the counter medications you can give your dog.
