Why is my new kitten sick with diarrhea, eye discharge, and bloat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 3 days old | 1lb

I got a kitten just a few days ago and she's had some symptoms since then. We've been feeding her a different food than her last owners since we couldn't find it in stores, and she's been experiencing diarrhea since thursday night (there was a small amount of blood in it that night but there hasn't been since then). She also has a small amount brown discharge in the corners of both eyes, a slightly bloated stomach, and palish gums.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. It sounds as if Cooky may be dehydrated having the diarrhea for several days now. If the diarrhea has not improved and she is in the current state that you are describing, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. If she is dehydrated, she would benefit from having subcutaneous fluids administered to help rehydrate her. I would also recommend bringing a fecal sample to the vet for testing to ensure she does not have intestinal parasites. I hope this guides you in the right direction! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further!
