Why is my dog gagging and vomiting foam for days? Toys or diet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 14 days old | 8 lbs

My dog has been wanting to throw up today but hasn’t . He keeps gagging now and then and has vomited for 3 days now a little foam he loves to chew on toys and was wondering if I should change the plush toys to more durable ones and if maybe it has to do with his eating schedule. He eats 2 times a day.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If he has been vomiting for several days, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him and test him for Parvo. He may have eaten something and now it is stuck in his intestinal tract causing an obstruction or may have dietary indiscretion from something he ate. If he is otherwise energetic, eating food and drinking water and you are unable to get to the vet right away or this weekend, I would initiate a bland diet as outlined below. If he continues to vomit and worsen, I would recommend getting him seen by a vet sooner rather than later. If he is able to destroy his current toys and swallow pieces whole, I would take them away and get him a different chew toy like the Kong toys. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
