My dog has a UTI. Why is he still having accidents and peeing a lot?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a six month old German Shepherd who has a UTI and is being treated with antibiotics. My concern is the random accidents he's having in the house. He also seems to urinating way more than he should be for the amount of water he's drinking. Per seems to have a bright yellow color to it.

The urinary accidents and excessive urination seem like normal signs of the UTI in my opinion. The bright yellow color also may be a side effect of the medication he is on or it is just really concentrated urine, both nothing to be concerned about. He should start to improve with these symptoms after 48-72 hrs of being on the medication. And as long as he has an uncomplicated UTI, you should see complete resolve within 10-24 days.

If he is having accidents in the house than it could be from the infection and the antibiotic just needs more time to work or it could be a behavioral issue or other medical problem. If his urine is bright yellow than it sounds like he is concentrating his urine normally but your vet can look at his urine specific gravity to make sure. If the accidents continue, your vet can submit a urine culture to make sure he is on the correct antibiotic.
