My dog is constipated, then got diarrhea from lactulose. What now?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 18 lbs

Our Brussell griffin dog, 18-20 lbs. has had constipation, straining to go but doesn't, we gave her lactolose and now has a some diarhea, what to do?

Lactulose has a wide dose range and can certainly cause diarrhea. I typically recommend adjusting the dose so that the stool is soft but formed like soft serve ice cream. You can try decreasing the lactulose by about 25%. If she is straining at all you should see a veterinarian, because occasionally dogs who are constipated can also pass small amounts of watery stool around the firm stool that is stuck.
