My dog's penis is swollen and stuck after mating. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Male | 5 years and 4 months old

Good day, my stud Boston Terrier Diesels penis tip has been swollen for about an hour and won't go back into skin. He has been trying to mate with my Boston Terrier bitch cause she is presently on heat. I thought the penis was only to swell at the Base.

I am so sorry to hear that your pet Diesel has swelling of his penis after mating attempts. This is not all that uncommon for a male's penis to get injured and inflamed and to remain stuck outside the penile sheath. This needs to be looked at by your vet immediately! The vet will work to get the penis swelling to go down by using 1 of many different methods (my favorite is to use a sugar compaction around the penis), then the use of a lubricant (KY jelly) should be able to facilitate the penis back in its normal position. Head to your vet right away to prevent subsequent tissue necrosis (dying off of tissue) that can occur due to improper blood supply to the penis head because of strangulation. You may want to consider for the future to have Diesel reproduce by artificial insemination, and then after his breeding days are over, highly consider getting him neutered because this sort of thing is bound to repeat itself over and over. Neutering your pet is ultimately the cure for priapism. Good luck with Diesel!
