My new female cat has a vaginal cut. What should I do to care for it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I recently bought a young cat from a woman on facebook and I didn't realize until later on that she has a cut on her vagina. The woman said the cat was in heat, but I'm not sure what to do about the cut, what do I do?

You can gently clean the cut with warm water and antiseptic soap if it isn't deep or long. You may need to put an Ecollar on the cat to keep her from licking at it. Keep it as clean and dry as possible, but do not put any topical antibiotic ointment on it. Although quite safe on superficial wounds, cats groom and ingest most of the topical ointment you apply and therefore should be used only under direct veterinary supervision and if there are no other appropriate options. Many human ointments contain multiple other ingredients which are not necessarily safe to be swallowed. Monitor the cut for signs of infection which include redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, and pus. Should you see any of those signs, take her into the vet right away. If the cut is deep and/or long, you will need to take her into the vet immediately as she will need stitches to close the cut.
