My cat's breathing sounds congested and his stomach is tender. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 10 months old | 10 lbs

My cat is almost 5yrs old w/no medical issues. But I've noticed in the past few months his breathing has gotten congested/heavy sounding, like I'd sound w/phlegm stuck in my chest. At first I chalked this up to hairballs but it's persisted. I think his stomach has been tender too since he no longer likes to be picked up

Poor Weasley! He could be suffering from a severe respiratory infection, cardiac disease, or heartworms among other causes. It is concerning that his breathing has gotten heavy sounding and congested, and I would have him seen by a vet as soon as possible. He should have a physical exam, blood tests, urinalysis, and x-rays to diagnose what is causing his symptoms so he can be treated. In the meantime, you can try using a humidifier or bringing him into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections.
