My cat has trouble swallowing, isn't eating, and gags. Vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 months and 16 days old

Hi, Since yesterday my cat has been having trouble swallowing, he gags and it looks like he is coughing or retching; my main concern is that he has stopped eating. His voice is also different; and I'm afraid he might have something stuck in his throat. Other than that he's behavior is normal. He comes in and out of the house the whole day and it's been cold outside which makes me think that he might be getting a sore throat. Should I take him to see the vet?

Poor Pumpkin! It definitely sounds like something isn't right. Yes, I would recommend taking him to the vet today for an exam - it's very concerning that he doesn't want to eat, as it can be dangerous for cats to go more than a day or two without eating since they can develop serious liver problems from this. Your vet can do a thorough oral exam to see if there is something stuck in his throat, or if he has a respiratory infection or other problem causing these symptoms. He may need an antibiotic or other medication to treat the problem depending on what is found.
