My dog barks and lunges at other dogs on walks. How can I stop this?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Cattle Dog | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old

Zeus is a good dog in general. He's not aggressive at home, or around people he knows. However, when we are out on walks and pass by another dog, he goes into what I think is defensive mode. He barks and growls & will try to bite the other dog, even though the other dog is not provoking him at all. I try to redirect his attention (calling his name, food, toys) but it doesn't work. I have to hold him until the other dog gets out of site. I'm not sure what I can do to stop this behavior.

It sounds like Zeus is showing inter-dog aggression. I would have Zeus seen by a professional behavioral expert for this behavior, and your vet can recommend one to you. Aggression is a very dangerous behavior to work with, and I never recommend owners try to train a dog who is showing any aggressive behaviors. I certainly would speak to your vet first thing tomorrow about this behavior to get that referral. While walking him, it would be best to avoid places where there are lots of dogs, or you may considered getting him a muzzle for walks. The last thing you want is for him to bite another dog. Good luck, I hope this advice helps you!
