My dog has a large bald bump on her back. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 years and 9 months old

My dog has a large bald bump on her back. It isn't growing, but it has been there for quite some time. Her behavior and eating habits have not changed, but I am still worried. Any suggestions?

Since it hasn't grown and has been there for some time, it could just be a cyst or benign growth. The best thing is to have your vet do a needle aspirate to determine the exact cause. Once diagnosed, your vet can determine if treatment is needed.

This looks like a benign growth, either a skin tag or cyst. Since it has not changed very much there is probably nothing to worry about. I would recommend keeping an eye on it for now. If the growth continues to change then you can have your vet do a fine needle aspirate and cytology so they can determine if it needs to be removed.
