Why isn't my Boxer puppy gaining weight? Is a 'skinny phase' real?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | unspayed | 10 months and 18 days old | 53 lbs

My dog recently stopped gaining weight. Shes a boxer and i can see her ribs just a little when she leans over to eat or something. I have talked to a worker at an animal control near me and she told me boxers sometimes go into a skinny phase and it takes a while to go away. Is this some myth or is she right?

It may be due to the fact that she is growing rapidly. The best thing would be to monitor her weight to make sure that she is not losing any weight. Have your vet run a stool test to make sure she doesn't have a parasite. You could also increase the amount that you are feeding her and see if that helps. If she is actually losing weight than she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause.
