Why is my new kitten meowing, hiding, and not using the litter box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 5 lbs

So I just adopted a male 6 month kitten and he is meowing. He is hiding under the bed since yesterday when I got him. He has food, water and litter but he won't use the litter box. He peed on the floor yesterday night before I went to sleep but I'm not sure why he is meowing

Congrats on your new kitten! Moving into a new home is very stressful for a cat, and it will take a couple of days for Starboy to adjust to his new home. Cats can be very particular about their litter, and if his box is too close to his food and water, he won't use it. Try to keep the litter box as far away from his food as possible. Not using the litter box can be a sign of illness, however, and if he keeps peeing outside the box, I would have him seen by the vet for an exam. A UTI would cause him to pee outside the box and be more vocal. The vet can a physical exam, blood tests, and a urinalysis to diagnose if he does have a UTI, and can treat him for it.
