How to potty train a foster dog having accidents all over the house?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Italian Greyhound | Female | spayed | 10.3 lbs

We have a foster dog (Italian Greyhound), who hasn't been easy to potty train. Our dog uses a potty system in our bathroom (the "Piddle Place") without issue and also goes outside. Our foster pup goes outside when we're there but was used to having a dog door (which we don't have) and going as she pleased, so she's been pooping/peeing all over the house. Any tips on getting her to use the Piddle Place like our dog, or signaling to go outside would be great.

It may be difficult to teach her how to use the piddle place so you should probably focus on teaching her to only go outside to potty. If the issue is only happening when you are not home, than you could crate her so she doesn't have free roam of the house. Make sure you take out the same door to go potty and use the same command, like "go potty." Once she goes than you should give her a treat. When she is inside and you are home, she should not be left unsupervised until she is completely trained. You could even keep her on leash at all times inside or put her in the crate when she can't be watched until she has mastered it. Hopefully, with time and consistency she will stop having accidents in the house.
